Why Human-Centered Design is Essential for Improving Customer Experience 

The federal government must prioritize customer experience (CX) to build trust and deliver efficient services to citizens. This involves using human-centered design, modernizing technology, and leveraging artificial intelligence. The Department of Justice recently received Technology Modernization Funding (TMF) to enhance and improve its case management systems. Effective platform governance is essential to managing technologies across departments and aligning priorities with citizen needs. The next Office of Management and Budget (OMB) CX lead has the opportunity to build upon past efforts and advance CX through leveraging technology.

The Number 

$1.6 Billion 

Constellation Energy plans to seek a $1.6 billion federal loan guarantee to restart a reactor at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island nuclear plant. The reactor would power a new Microsoft AI data center and serve the broader power grid. As one of the first nuclear plant restarts in the U.S., the project requires regulatory approvals and strict safety oversight. If Constellation secures the loan guarantee, taxpayers would bear the risk in case of default. The company aims to have the reactor operational by 2028.

Navigating The Federal AI frontier 

The role of chief AI Officers (CAIOs) in federal agencies is vital for ensuring responsible and ethical AI deployment. CAIOs should prioritize understanding agency-specific needs, fostering trustworthy AI, promoting AI literacy, establishing governance frameworks, managing risks and compliance, improving talent acquisition, driving innovation, ensuring interoperability, engaging stakeholders, and tracking success. By addressing these areas, CAIOs can effectively manage  AI governance complexities and position their agencies to fully leverage AI's potential.

State CIOs Compare AI Projects to ‘Building a Plane Mid-Flight

At a technology conference, state officials raised concerns about the challenges and cost of incorporating generative AI into state operations. They cited issues like low digital literacy, data privacy, and managing an influx of public records. Officials also pointed to the cost of ownership and the environmental impact of AI technology. State Chief Information Officers (CIO) expressed uncertainty about the long-term budget effects and the strain on power grids. Additionally, they emphasized the need for transparency and disclosure of AI usage by vendors. Despite these challenges,  officials recognized the potential benefits of generative AI but stressed the importance of building public trust in its implementation.
