US Joins EU’s AI and Human Rights Council 

The European Union (EU) has opened its AI and Human Rights Framework Convention, allowing nations to sign a treaty establishing global AI standards. The treaty addresses AI-related discrimination, particularly regarding gender, race, and ethnicity. The United States and other countries have already signed on. The Council of Europe aims for it to be the first global AI governance treaty, aligning with U.S. policy and the Biden administration’s commitment to human rights and democratic values.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) estimates that AI could contribute up to $15.7 trillion to the global economy in 2030 – surpassing the combined current economic output of China and India.

California Explores AI Solutions to Tackle State Challenges Through Vendor Demonstrations

California is conducting market research to assess the potential of AI tools in addressing state challenges. The state has invited vendors to showcase the capabilities of their GenAI tools, with a focus on streamlining legislative research, improving data accuracy, recession planning, and connecting vulnerable individuals to treatment beds. Selected vendors will have 15 minutes to present, followed by a Q&A session. This initiative builds on previous state partnerships for GenAI solutions.

IBM Report Highlights the Public Sector’s Need for Technology Modernization in Crisis Response 

A report by the IBM Institute for Business Value found that public sector organizations embracing new technologies were better equipped to handle the COVID-19 pandemic. While most governments were unprepared, those committed to modernization improved crisis management services by an average of 54%. The report highlights the need for investing in technology and cybersecurity, warning that resistance to modernization can hinder a government’s ability to protect its citizens. It calls for governments to adopt a more agile, forward-thinking approach as crisis events increase.
